Писатель-сатирик, государственный и общественный деятель, администратор, сторонник "джефферсоновской демократии" [Jeffersonian Democracy]. Его предки были выходцами из Голландии. Играл заметную роль в культурной жизни Нью-Йорка. В 1807-08 и 1816-20 издал серию сатирических эссе "Салмагунди" ["Salmagundi"] о жизни нью-йоркцев, оставил богатое творческое наследие, основа которого - произведения о жизни европейских переселенцев в Америке. Хотя он не имел систематического образования, в 1824 ему было присвоено звание почетного магистра Колумбийского университета [Columbia University]. Среди произведений Полдинга: сатирическая история отношений Англии и Соединенных Штатов "Забавная история Джона Булля и брата Джонатана" ["The Diverting History of John Bull and Brother Jonathan"] (1813); исторические романы "Конингсмарк" ["Koningsmark"] (1823), "Очаг голландца" ["The Dutchman's Fireside"] (1831), "Вперед, на Запад!" ["Westward Ho!"] (1832), "Старый европеец, или Цена свободы" ["The Old Continental, or, the Price of Liberty"] (1846), "Пуританин и его дочь" ["The Puritan and His Daughter"] (1849); комедии "Лев Запада" ["The Lion of the West"] (1831), в которой впервые появился образ Дэви Крокетта [Davy (David) Crockett] и с юмором описывалось освоение Фронтира [Frontier] и "Оленьи хвосты, или Американцы в Англии" ["The Bucktails, or, Americans in England"] (1847); сатирическая проза "Джон Буль в Америке, или Новый Мюнхгаузен" ["John Bull in America, or, The New Munchhausen"] (1825), трактаты и исторические работы, в том числе "Жизнь Вашингтона" ["A Life of Washington"] (1835), "Рабство в Соединенных Штатах" ["Slavery in the United States"] (1836) и др.
